I'm thrilled to share the news that developers from over 70 countries submitted 1,788 entries to the Android Developer Challenge!
Here are a few facts that I thought were interesting. When we announced the Android Developer Challenge back in January, developers started submitting entries right away but it wasn't until the April 14 deadline approached that the flood really began. The rate of submissions spiked in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, reaching as high as 170+ submissions per hour.
What I find truly amazing is how global the interest in the challenge has been. Developers from the United States submitted one-third of the total applications while the rest came from countries such as Germany, Japan, China, India, Canada, France, UK, and many others. The entries are also very diverse representing many application areas, from games to social-networking applications, to utilities, to productivity and developer tools, and many more. On behalf of the Open Handset Alliance, I want to thank everyone who has submitted entries to the challenge. We look forward to reviewing all of them.
Now that the applications are in, over 100 judges will soon receive judging packets and laptops that we've preloaded with all the submissions, for a consistent, fair environment to judge the submissions. The majority of the judges are from member companies of the Open Handset Alliance, in addition to non-alliance mobile industry experts who have all graciously volunteered their time. I'd like to thank these judges too for all the time they will be putting into this.
In May, we'll be informing the 50 Semi-finalists who will be awarded $25,000 each. Until then, the team and I will have our hands full.

Finally the numbers revealed!
Great information.. Thanks for sharing.
Google has done the right thing in disclosing the numbers, irrespective of other constraints.
Glad to know developers all around the world participated in ADC and Good luck to all of the submissions.
Since USA is the most populated country from the list, it's maybe more relevant to know the number of contribution than the proportion ...
Are you going to announce the list of entries and/or semifinalists?
That's amazing news.
I hope that Android and the iPhone finally show Nokia and those other arrogant manufacturers how innovative the mobile environment can really be if you JUST let the people create...
is it MacBook laptops?
WOW! I think THIS is the proof that Android will have the sheer number of robust, meaningful, useful applications that will drive it's success.
Consumers would have no reason to "switch" to Android unless it offered something truly unique. 1788 Entries? I think this solidifies my opinion from Day 1... that Android IS the mobile revolution.
Any of you folks want to chat about Android, your submissions, etc... visit Android Forums
I hope you'll later run a site where we can see and read about all those great apps :) I'm soooo eager to see what the community built!
Azhar,
Our application relies on media that is delivered on a pre-loaded sdcard. So, in the emulator environment, the sdcard image file must be loaded onto the laptop and the emulator must be run against that sdcard image. Given the process you've described, how will the judges know that they need to run the emulator against our sdcard image? Without the sdcard image, they cannot get a fair impression of the value of our application.
1,788 entries isnt bad. Some people were predicting a lot less. Good luck everyone.
Although I'm not a developer, I wanted to share my excitement for android. I'm a smart phone user and have been waiting patiently ever since hearing about the new operating system.
Really looking forward to getting an android phone and supporting the community. Thanks to all who invested time toward a new platform.
Sean
Does the number 1,788 include the teams who had trouble submitting? Or these teams, like us waiting since one week to hear back from Google, were completely ignored?
You said "as high as 170+ submissions per hour" in the last hours before the deadline, and if you look through the posts by the developers in the Android groups, you can see how many people had problems getting an acknowledgement from Google. As such, we had problems submitting and we did not receive any acknowledgment. We tried submitting several times in the last hour to no avail. After half an hour past the deadline we posted a message to the Android Groups asking for help from the Support Team. With no answer, within an hour we resorted to sending an email to two of the Support Team members, Dianne Hackborn (hackbod@gmail.com) and Megha Joshi (androidsupport@gmail.com), with our submission data. One week past, and still no answer...
We were very disappointed by this lack of response from Google after putting so much work into this. We expected this process to be fair and fun, but we found that the submission process to be flawed and the Support Team to be ignorant. The inquiries of these people were left unanswered by the Support Team (see posts in the Android Challenge group), except notifying the developers, only in the last hours, that the submission process is flawed and you need to resubmit if you don't get an acknowledgment. Once the deadline was passed, not only the submission form disappeared, but the website was left with no point of contact! We find this unfair and irresponsible behavior of the Android Challenge Management especially with "developers from over 70 countries" devoting their time and energy for Android.
We have records that these two Support Team members received our submission, and we demand an answer to our standing in the Challenge from Google. We always knew Google as being fair and responsible and we expect that they should treat teams like us fairly.
Sincerely (and still waiting for an answer),
Anca Doloc-Mihu and Cengiz Gunay
Android is NOT robust. I have submitted many tickets regarding all of the shortcomings.
It is great to know the number of application that have been submitted for the challenge. But is it possible to publish that out of submittion is there any application that couldn't run in the emulator or having any type of problem that leads those application for exclution from the contest ?
can't wait for android phone to come out! i am currently a nokia user, and really like what apple made, but would like to switch to more open platform and i like the idea that with android hardware manufacturers will complete!
Looking forward for the Results :)
It would be very interesting to know how many apps were submited from each country. Thanks Google for the oportunity.
Are the results coming this week or today May 5th..
Is there any official results release date ?
It used to be May 5, if I'm not mistaken, but currently I only see "May".
Many applications were submitted, for just over 100 Judges, so they probably need more time, but is there a new target date ?
Thanks for any info
Any ideas when the results will be announced?
When will the results be announced?
Thanks
